There is something in all of us that craves recognition, but that craving may be the very thing holding us back from the life God designed for us. In Luke 14, Jesus uses a Sabbath dinner at a Pharisee's home to expose the pride hiding beneath religious respectability. Through two powerful lessons, one about choosing the lowest seat and one about inviting those who cannot repay you, Jesus redefines what honor and greatness look like in the Kingdom of God. The Pharisees were so consumed with self-importance that their religion had become entirely self-serving. Like the man with dropsy who was swollen on the outside because of something broken on the inside, pride swells us up in ways we often cannot see in ourselves. Jesus does not just call us to stay humble. He calls us to actively lift up the people around us who have nothing to offer in return. That is not how the world operates, but it is exactly how Jesus lived. True freedom comes not from chasing importance, but from laying it down.

In Luke 11, Jesus sits down at a Pharisee's table and delivers six sobering woes that cut to the heart of religious hypocrisy. These woes are not expressions of anger but of grief, spoken by a Savior who loves people too much to let them stay stuck. The Pharisees were giving God their obedience while holding back their hearts, using faith for self-promotion, and making it harder for others to know Him. Jesus is not just speaking to the Pharisees. He is speaking to anyone who follows Him on their own terms, picking and choosing what to apply and what to ignore. The call is simple but costly: stop following Jesus conveniently and start following Him completely. He does not want a portion of your life. He wants all of it.

Following Jesus means more than believing the right things. It means becoming an apprentice, learning how He lived so we can live like Him. In the story of Jesus feeding thousands with five loaves and two fish, the most important moment is not the miracle itself. It is when Jesus looks at His disciples and says, "You feed them." The disciples had just returned from an incredible mission, yet they immediately defaulted to focusing on what they lacked. Jesus patiently showed them again that everything needed for the mission is found in Him. He is not just calling us to admire Him from a distance. He is sending us out as His representatives, equipped with His presence, His power, and His authority.

The question of where we belong follows us far beyond the school lunchroom and into every season of life. In Luke 5, Jesus approaches Levi, a despised tax collector, and invites him in with two simple words: follow me. Jesus did not see Levi for who he had become but for who he could become. After saying yes, Levi threw a banquet and filled his table with the very people society had written off. Jesus sat with all of them, because wherever He is, everyone is welcome. Your life is a table, and people around you are waiting to be invited. The same invitation that changed Levi is extended to you, and through you, to everyone in your life.
